An opinion article in the New York Times places the Golden Rule at the center of how to manage our broken world. The title of the article is “How We Broke the World – Greed and globalization set us up for disaster.“ by Thomas L. Friedman. In it Friedman writes about warnings that tend to occur before major crises take over and break structures in our world. He provides many good examples as he reasons through the process of a warning event becoming a global crisis. In conclusion he states,
As the world gets more deeply intertwined, everyone’s behavior — the values that each of us bring to this interdependent world — matters more than ever. And, therefore, so does the “Golden Rule.” It’s never been more important.
Do unto others as you wish them to do unto you, because more people in more places in more ways on more days can now do unto you and you unto them like never before.
The founders of the Golden Rule Project agree, and we appreciate it when the ancient and universal idea of the Golden Rule can be shown as a solution to our modern, global predicaments. Thank you Mr. Friedman, and remember, the greatness is in the struggle to see how our actions and values affect others and to choose our actions so as to increase the harmonious solutions that we would want for ourselves.
